Well this Monday just gone (25th May 2015) I entered week 8 of the couch to 5k programme, which consists of the following…
Week 8 – “For the runs in Week 8, you will begin with a brisk 5-minute warm-up walk then 28 minutes of running.“
I am rather pleased and proud to report that this is the week, a week early in terms of the programme, that I have broken the 5k distance covering 5.4km within the 28 minutes! This has given me a massive buzz and sense of achievement and although the first run of the week was tough I still managed to set a 5k time of 25.49 (apparently not to be scoffed at for someone my age).
I had thought that I would easily manage the 5k in 28 minutes as during the previous week I was gradually creeping towards the 5k boundary covering 4.6k in run one, 4.7k in run two and 4.8k in run three, all over the duration of 25 minutes. But I never thought I’d be sub 26 minutes and this morning, to top things off, I was even quicker taking 22 seconds off Mondays effort with a 5k time of 25.27!
I would like to believe that I’m not going to become too time obsessed, as I feel this may take away some of the enjoyment I get from plodding around the country side, but it would seem that I still have some of my former athletic prowess from my youth!
Friday will see me complete this run for the last time before moving on the the final week of the Couch to 5k programme, week 9, in which I’ll be running for 30 minutes. I think I’m going to have to come up with further adaptions to my current route in order to accommodate the extra few minutes!
